Armley Gyratory

The improvements to Armley Gyratory are a central part of the Leeds City Centre Package (LCCP), a £250m investment in remaking the City Centre. 

Matthews Construction Consultants have been engaged to provide both cost and project management support to Leeds City Council from the outset of the project, through its feasibility, design, and now construction.

At the heart of the LCCP is the closure of City Square, providing a world class gateway to the City. Armley Gyratory is the key strategic facilitator for the City Square closure, by providing enhancements to the strategic road network. Alongside these works Leeds City Council are revolutionising the pedestrian and active travel provision around the Gyratory, providing safe, attractive routes to provide a connection between Armley and the City Centre that will promote and encourage active travel through this key corridor.

Phase 1 - Highways Capacity

The improvements to the Gyratory to provide the additional physical capacity to the junction including additional lanes and stacking capacity on the key approaches from A643 and A58 as well as the new carriageway alignment within the central island. Works also include the widening of the existing NEGas underpass.

Phase 1 - Highways Capacity (Completion)

Completion of the full scope of the Highways Phase including all new signage, VRS, additional drainage and storm water storage and installation of new traffic signals. The works will include the planting of new trees to replace those removed as a result of the works at a ratio of 3:1.

Phase 2 - Structures

This phase comprises the construction of the new footbridges and alterations to the Network Rail abutments on the A58 to provide a 4m wide shared footpath around the Gyratory for pedestrians and cyclists. It includes the demolition and replacement of 3 nr existing footbridges along with the removal and reconstruction of bridge abutments in conjunction with Network Rail.

The works will facilitate better active travel connectivity throughout the area with new connections also formed to the new cycle and pedestrian routes through the new Doncaster Monkbridge development towards Whitehall Road.
