CityConnect Cycle Superhighway

The CityConnect Cycle Superhighway is a programme of works delivered in partnership between the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Leeds City Council, and City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

The programme was split into two phases and delivered a safe, segregated cycle route that links Bradford and Leeds.

To aid in the delivery of this programme of works Matthews Construction Consultants provided robust commercial assurance, contract administration support, and risk management services.

Start Date: January 2014

Completion Date: July 2019

Location: Leeds, United Kingdom

Phase 1

This phase of the project successfully delivered an award winning segregated cycle superhighway between Leeds and Bradford, starting just outside Leeds City Centre and reaching Bradford via Armley, Bramley, Stanningley and Thornbury.

This was the first of a number of cycle routes providing segregation from the highway, priority over cars at most side road junctions and increased safety measures along its length.

Phase 2

The second phase of this project took the segregated route from the western edge of the city through the centre to the eastern side and was successfully delivered in 2019 within the £8.3m budget despite the insolvency of the original contractor in the early stages of delivery.
