David Oluwale Bridge

The David Oluwale Bridge project entailed the design and build of a new bridge, spanning the River Aire between Sovereign Street and Water Lane, in memory of David Oluwale and was a long-term partnership project between Leeds City Council, the David Oluwale Memorial Association (DOMA) and key stakeholders across the city.

The project was also a crucial aspect of the South Bank Regeneration Programme, which aims to provide 8,000 new homes and 35,000 new jobs, new educational establishments and a new city park.

As part of our support to Leeds City Council, Matthews Construction Consultants provided commercial and cost management services, working closely alongside Leeds City Council’s project management team and the contractor.

Start Date: September 2021

Completion Date: January 2023

Location: Leeds, United Kingdom

This 30m long 40 tonne bridge was delivered by a BAM and Mott MacDonald joint venture, with construction starting in January 2022.

The scope of works included high quality hard and soft landscaping public realm works on the South bank, which tie in with the Grey to Green initiative on Crown Point Road, with a locally based specialist sub-contractor SH Structures supplying the bridge to this constrained city centre site.

Now fully open to the public, the bridge will be used by pedestrians and cyclists as well as being a key element of the ambitious South Bank Regeneration Programme.

Additionally, the project also complements several other improvements in the area, including the transformation of Crown Point Road, with more space for walking, cycling and bus facilities being created as part of the upcoming Aire Park development – a mixed-use district with the UK’s largest new city centre green space at its heart.
